What are injectables?

Non-surgical injectables are the cornerstone of maintenance of a youthful appearance. Dr. Yates has extensive experience as an injector for Botox and Fillers. At the Yates Institute we offer a broad range of products, and create individualized treatment plans to suit your goals. Typically, there is minimal downtime and Dr. Yates is well known for her natural appearing results and gentle hand.

What is Botox (Botulinum Toxin)?

Botulinum Toxin is a purified substance that’s derived from bacteria. Commonly known types of Botulinum Toxin Type A injections include BOTOX® and Dysport® Injections of Botulinum toxin blocks muscular nerve signals, which then weakens the muscle so it cannot contract. The end result is diminished, unwanted facial wrinkles.

What are BOTOX® and Dysport?

They are brands of botulinum toxin type A injections which temporarily relax the muscles that cause wrinkles in your brow, forehead and around the eyes. After treatment, you will feel more confident and look more youthful as wrinkles are smoothed out. You will also look less tired as the brow is often raised and eyes look wider and more open. If done regularly, this procedure prevents new lines (wrinkles) in the skin, and slows the aging process. If you have frown or forehead lines, crow’s feet, smile lines around your eyes, or all of these, then BOTOX®, Dysport ® injections will make you appear more relaxed and less tired.

How long until I will see results and how long does it last?

The actual injection process takes about 10 minutes. It takes 5-7 days for the full effect of BOTOX®, Dysport ® to be noticed. If you have an important upcoming event, Dr. Yates recommends scheduling injections no later than 2 weeks prior. Wrinkle reduction varies among patients and improvement typically lasts 3 to 4 months before another treatment is necessary.

Dysport ® and/or Dermal Fillers?

If you are physically healthy, do not smoke and have a positive and realistic goal for your appearance, you would be a good candidate.

Who cannot be injected?

BOTOX®, Dysport ® & Dermal Fillers are contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding or for people with certain neurological conditions such as: Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert Eaton) and eye conditions (Double Vision, Ptosis) and are not recommended for anyone who had a previous allergic reaction to another botulinum product, has a skin infection or is under 18 years of age.

What are the Risks/Side Effects of Injectables?

BOTOX® and Dysport® have been used safely since 1998 to treat muscle diseases of eyes, voice box, headaches, stomach spasm, and other neuromuscular diseases. It is approved by FDA for cosmetic treatment of brow wrinkles, excess sweating of the underarms and certain muscular disorders of the neck, eyes, and eyelids. Small bruising after injections is common side effect. A “Spock Effect” is when one eyebrow is lifted higher than the other and is easily corrected with an additional treatment. It is common for the injected area to look like a “mosquito bite” for 20-60 additional minutes. Little “red dots” may appear but resolve in a few days. Bruising may last from 7-10 days and may be camouflaged with makeup that can be applied immediately. Drooping eyebrow or eyelid, or double vision is a much less common side effect.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal Fillers are types of wrinkle fillers which help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face. As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent. The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle. Dermal Fillers are also used as “volumizers,“ plumping and lifting cheeks, chins, jawlines, and temples; filling out thin lips, and plumping sagging hands.

What are common dermal fillers?

  • Restylane Filler®
  • Juvederm®
  • Juvederm® Ultra
  • Juvederm® Ultra Plus

What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers can be very helpful in those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery. It is important to note that hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are not permanent treatments. Often, they are injected at the same time as BOTOX®, Dysport ® to enhance other areas of the face such as:

  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Soften facial creases and wrinkles
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scars

How will I look and feel after Injections?

Dr. Yates uses her expertise to create a completely natural and youthful look customized for your facial structure. She often uses a combination of Botox/Dysport with Dermal Fillers. Dr. Yates avoids over-injecting to prevent a “frozen look”. In one week, you may wish to call for a touch up appointment. Additional charges may apply.

What are risks/side effects of dermal fillers?

Common side effects include swelling, redness, bruising, tenderness, itching, or pain at the injection. Small bruising after injections is common. It is common for the injected area to look like a “mosquito bite” for 20-60 additional minutes. Little “red dots” may appear but resolve in a few days. Bruising may last from 7-10 days and may be camouflaged with makeup that can be applied immediately. Dermal fillers may result in a bit of “down-time” depending upon the area treated. For example, lips may swell for 7-10 days after treatment whereas nasolabial folds (also called “smile lines” or “laugh lines”) may not swell at all. Drooping eyebrow or eyelid, or double vision is a much less common side effect.

The consultation with Dr. Yates

Schedule the appointment with Dr. Yates – this is the first step towards getting the results you desire with the help of injectables. During this consultation, you will discuss your needs and desires and allow Dr. Yates to perform a medical examination and tell you what can be achieved in your particular case.

Generally speaking, these are important parts of the consultation:

• Discussing your desires

• Evaluating your eligibility for the procedure

• Dr. Yates tells you about available options for facial rejuvenation with fillers and injectables

• Dr. Yates recommends the most suitable procedure or combination of procedures that can help you achieve your aesthetic goals

• Discussing the results to be expected after the procedure and their longevity, as well as pre-operative preparation and post-operative care

Keep in mind that the success of your procedure is dependent on honestly sharing your thoughts and expectations with Dr. Yates. The injectables have limitations, and their results are not comparable with the results of facelift surgery, for example. If what you want is a dramatic improvement, make sure to mention this so Dr. Yates can suggest the best alternative for you.

What results can be achieved with dermal fillers?

Most patients are surprised when they see the results of dermal filler injections and how fast they occur. After the treatment, you will get indications about post-op care and what you can do to prolong and maximize the results achieved.

After the injections, you can experience slight discomfort, edema, and even a tension sensation. There is a risk of minor bruising too. What is important to know is that these side effects disappear on their own within the first few days after the treatment, with no additional medication. If you have a very light complexion, you might experience a certain level of skin swelling, too, and the healing can take a bit longer in this case. The recommendation is to use sunscreen, even if you’re not spending too much time outside.

Keep in mind that the results can vary depending on the area treated, your individual metabolism, and your lifestyle choices. Dermal fillers tend to get reabsorbed faster from a dynamic area that involves muscular activity. This explains the extended longevity of fillers when used in combination with Botox in the same area.

Botox Injections FAQs

Can Botox Be Undone?

Botox injections use a neurotoxin to temporarily relax a muscle and prevent it from moving. There is no antidote for botox now, but the chances of needing one are slim if you choose a talented and experienced plastic surgeon. Keep in mind that botox is just a temporary treatment so that the effects will disappear in time on their own without the need for an antidote.

Is Botox A Permanent Treatment?

Generally speaking, the effects of botox injections can be visible for about three to four months. For some patients, the results can be visible even after six months, and it really depends from one patient to the other. But Botox injections don’t cause permanent results. To sustain the results, the patient would need to get additional injections once the effect has worn off.

What Is Botox Cosmetic Treatment?

Botox injections are used to help patients get a smoother face and a rejuvenated appearance. The neurotoxin is injected into the muscles to prevent them from moving, and with this, we achieve two things – first, the fine lines and wrinkles become less visible as the muscle stops contracting, and second, ulterior damage to the skin is avoided because the skin doesn’t get wrinkled when the muscles don’t contract. As a result, the patient looks younger for longer.

What Cosmetic Condition Can Be Treated with Botox?

Botox injections are a popular facial cosmetic treatment used for rejuvenating purposes. However, the neurotoxin injections can also be used to treat conditions such as migraines, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, and even some eye problems. However, it is important to mention that the treatment needs to be repeated after three to six months to sustain the results.

If Too Much Botox Is Injected, How Do You Reverse the Effects?

You can’t really reverse the effects of botox injections. This is the reason why this procedure shouldn’t be taken lightly, and you should choose your doctor with care. You might have seen people with frozen faces, unable to form a smile, drooling from the mouth, and other unwanted side effects of botox injections. This usually happens when the person doing the injections is not properly trained or has limited experience. Do your research before deciding who is going to do your botox injections. A poor aesthetic result can’t be reversed, and you will need to wait three to six months for the effects to subside on their own.

Can Botox Injections Cause Health Problems?

You should know that no procedure is risk-free. There are certain potential risks and side effects associated with botox injections. Among them, we can mention swelling and bruising at the injection site, as well as mild pain and discomfort. Headaches and even flu-like symptoms can also occur after getting botox injections. In case of unsatisfactory results, you might be left with droopy eyelids or asymmetric brows.

What Are the Benefits of Botox Injections?

Most commonly, Botox injections are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines at the level of the face. However, neurotoxin injections can also be used for the treatment of headaches, neck spasms, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, or lazy eye. What Is It Like to Get Botox Injections?

If you are wondering how it feels when getting botox injections, you should know that most patients mention the procedure is mostly pain-free. The injections feel like a slight sting, and the discomfort doesn’t last too long to turn into pain. It’s also important to mention that most patients find the discomfort well worth it and they get repeated treatments to sustain the results for longer.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox Injections?

Swelling and bruising can occur on the treated side, but they usually subside without additional treatment in a matter of days. Other more severe side effects can occur, such as headache or flu-like symptoms. Droopy eyelids, asymmetric brows, crooked smiles, and even drooling can also occur.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are volumizing substances used to fill in fine lines and wrinkles to make the patient look younger. Generally speaking, hyaluronic acid is used to add volume to different areas of the face to create a rejuvenated appearance. Dermal fillers can be used to change the contour of the face and even on the nose and jaw level to create an improved shape. Just like is the case with botox injections, dermal fillers injections offer only a temporary effect. The treatment needs to be repeated every six to twelve years to sustain the results.

What Are Lip Fillers Made Of?

Lip fillers are made of hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that is naturally present in our body, so it doesn’t trigger any allergic reaction and is well tolerated by most patients. A synthetic hyaluronic filler is injected into the lips to give them more volume and create the desired lip shape.

How Does Dermal Filler Works On the Face?

Unlike the botox injections that work by relaxing the muscle, dermal fillers have a volumizing effect. In other words, the injections are used on sunken areas, areas that lack volume or need a correction in shape. At the same time, dermal fillers can be used to plump up the skin for a more youthful appearance and to fill in wrinkles from the inside. As a result, the skin is smoother, plumper, and looks firmer.

How Long Will Dermal Fillers Last?

The effects of dermal fillers are longer lasting compared to botox injections. Of course, how much dermal filler last depends from one patient to the other. In some cases, it could be as little as six months, while other patients get to enjoy the results for a year or even two years. In time, the hyaluronic acid is dissolved by the body, and the area treated returns to its initial shape and volume.

How Safe Are Injectable Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers have some side effects associated with them, such as bruising and swelling; however, the procedure is safe when performed by an experienced professional. The experience is crucial if you want to get the best possible results and avoid complications such as lumps under the skin, infection, asymmetry, and bleeding.
